This weekend I was in Daytona Beach enjoying the beautiful weather while attending the Rennsport Reunion. The reunion was for Porsche owners and enthusiasts to get together and share their experiences, their cars and to learn and see history making Porsches all in one weekend. I went for the sunshine and to be with Jamie who loves this stuff and can tell you all about the history and mechanical advantages of one Porsche vintage versus another. On the plane ride over I had adequate time to catch up on my reading of new scientific findings.
Surprisingly, I found a great article in Scientific American about the cancer preventative aspects of sunshine and specifically Vitamin D. Most of you know that sunshine makes you feel great and now we are learning much more about the potent health effects of sunshine and possibly a better understanding as to why cancer may be on the rise in these past few decades. In the past 20 years at least parents have been told to keep their kids inside or slathered in sunscreen to prevent dreaded skin cancers in the future. Now the pendulum of understanding is swinging the other way and we are learning that maybe mother nature doesn't have it out for us bombarding us with harmful UVB rays of sunshine.
Interestingly, at the turn of the last (20th) century when tuberculosis was rampant a reliable cure was to send patients to a sanatorium to bask in the sunshine of a warm climate. Now we are finding that same sunshine stimulates the production of Vitamin D which them is both antibacterial and antiviral to allow the body to fight potent and deadly infections more effectively. For decades doctors knew that the lack of vitamin D lead to rickets, a deforming bone density problem that caused calcium utilization problems and thus brittle and soft bones. Now scientists are finding that not only are the bones being affected, but also the brain, breast tissue, fat, intestines, immune cells, kidneys, liver, nerves, pancreas, parathyroid gland, prostate and skin tissue are all affected positively by vitamin D. The most effective producer of vitamin D production by the body is sunshine. In fact, just 5-15 minutes per day (depending on your skin color) is sufficient to give you adequate vitamin D production to reduce your risk of type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, breast, prostate, colon, ovarian and overall cancer rate throughout your life.
Epidemic Deficiency
Scientists are finding that many Americans are now deficient in vitamin D due to overuse of sunblock and the tendency to work indoors. During Winter months, especially in high latitude places where there is muted or deficient sunlight make sure to supplement with vitamin D. Also, the darker your skin color the more direct sunlight you will need to ensure adequate vitamin D production. If you have a family history or personal history of skin cancer supplementation and regular measurement of blood levels of vitamin D are important rather than exposing yourself to too much sunshine that puts you at risk for skin cancer. A good rule to remember is that moderation is key. You really only need no more than half an hour on a Fall day to get all the positive effects of Vitamin D so no need to bake in the sun for hours to the leathery doneness we all fear.
My days at the races were terrific after hurricane Noel passed Florida. The sun was out, I enjoyed being with Jamie and learning about the history of Porsche and racing. A perfect Autumn weekend in sunny Florida getting my supply of vitamin D and feeling great soaking up the sun.

Some time before, I did need to buy a car for my organization but I didn't have enough cash and could not order anything. Thank goodness my brother adviced to try to take the mortgage loans at trustworthy creditors. Therefore, I acted so and was happy with my auto loan.
