For decades we have been taught by the general media that soy foods, tofu and the like are some ancient Chinese secret to health and well being. Well, here is news for many of you who might not fully understand who actually was telling you those lies. Much of the information on the menopausal, weight, heart disease benefits of soy were bought and paid for by the soy industry itself. Understand that most of the soy that Americans consume are either genetically modified, highly sprayed with pesticides or processessed so that we can hardly recognize it as soy. Soy products have snuck into the American diet in the past few decades as a "vegetarian", thus healthier way of keeping us thinner and younger.
WRONG! Soy is a hormone disruptor and yes it can help with some menopausal side effects but it can also
- Make you diabetic
- Make you fat or keeps you from losing weight
- Suppress your thyroid function
- Block your own production of digestive enzymes that are required for your to absorb your vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients for your body to function properly. This leads to malnutrition.
- Contributes to hormonal imbalance in men and women...including breast cysts, breast cancer, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids in women and prostate problems in men.
So if you were in my office debating the pros and cons of soy, I would tell you that I would only recommend soy in it's fermented form. Naturally brewed or fermented soy sauce (some soy sauces are not fermented so be careful), miso, tempeh or natto. Most of these are Japanese foods which have been eaten in relatively small amounts for generations. The Japanese know that soy is not a healthy food for consumption in large amounts without fermentation. Note that the fermentation process is mandatory to inactivate many of the toxic enzymes and isoflavones that adversely affect your body's functioning.
Soy oil is a particular problem since it is very cheap to produce, it is often integrated into mayonnaise and other processed foods that require oil. Soy oil is a toxic brew of oil of soy chemically extracted and is heavily ladened with pesticides that furthur disrupt your hormones.
Don't forget the impact of soy in the "fake" meats or meat substitutes and textured vegetable proteins which are all soy derived and have an enormous impact on many of our vegetarians and vegans. Soy milk is found at virtually every Starbuck's and latte stand nowadays. Many of you who drink soy milk will find that you will be able to lose weight much more easily without the soy milk. So next time you think you are doing yourself a favor by putting soy milk into your latte, just remember the possible health problems you may be in for in the future. Soy is used to fatten animals so it can do the same to your body.
The FDA has a database with over 250 research articles on the
toxic effects of soy. The following link to a
website in New Zealand is the most comprehensive information on soy health effects, soy research and soy politics. It's been going for years and is extremely useful.
Wonderful post... Very informational and educational as usual!

For us vegans. We were excited about trying this location out since we’re big fans of Green Papaya and their long list of actual vegan options. Green Papaya was always overlooked on our lunch walks.
