My grandfather lived until he was 103 years old. He was my idol in my youth and had a great impact on who I am today. The number of centenarians have increased by 51% between 1990 and 2000. He was a very active person for as far back as I can recall. He was an avid gardener, chef (made a mean banana bread) and patriarch of his family. He was in excellent health until he was 98 when he suffered a stroke. Up until that time he was the first to rise and was active throughout the day, except when he watched his soap operas in the afternoons. Prevention magazine has listed for us 26 points that researchers have outlined as healthy habits for helping us live healthy and happy lives into our next century. I've listed the points below. To read the full article, go to Prevention Magazine's article.
- You run 40 minutes a day
- You’d rather walk
- You don’t have a housekeeper
- You strengthen your legs
- You like raspberries in your oatmeal
- You make every calorie count
- You’re a tea lover
- You skip cola, even diet
- You eat purple foods
- You don’t like burgers
- You have a relatively flat belly after menopause
- You were a healthy-weight teen
- You’re the life of the party
- You’re a flourisher
- You feel 13 years younger than you are
- You embrace the challenge
- You really like your friends
- ...and they’re healthy
- You’ve been a college freshman
- You embrace techie trends
- Your pulse beats 15 times in 15 seconds
- You started Menopause after age 50
- You had a baby later in life
- Your mom had you young
- You don’t snore
- You get your blood tested for vitamin D levels
So there you have it. I don't believe in the snoring point because my grandpa snored enough to shake the house down. Also, I watched an interview when I lived in Australia where an 80 something Australian farmer who swore that fruits and vegetables were horrible for you and that he would only eat beef, lamb and potatoes...go figure. He was a healthy as a horse. That was his personal perspective on longevity. For the rest of us, these points are a good start.
