Is there really such a thing where you can lose weight and inches by getting injections into your skin with natural substances to melt your fat away? In short, the answer is "yes" and Mesotherapy is the name of the technique. Mesotherapy was pioneered by a French Physician, Dr. Michel Pistor in 1952. Mesotherapy is a relatively painless, non-surgical injection procedure that is used worldwide to treat a broad range of conditions including aesthetics, specifically for fat and cellulite reduction. Other possible uses of Mesotherapy is pain and sports trauma such as bone spurs, sports trauma, tendinitis, migraines, muscle relaxation as well as for scars, wrinkles and hair loss.
This article focuses on the use of Mesotherapy as a viable alternative to the popular tumescent liposuction. Many patients ask what the difference is between the two. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes the fat cells from under the skin. Mesotherapy to dissolve fat does not remove the fat cell but the fat within the cell. Unlike Liposuction there are very few side effects related to mesotherapy other than some swelling and redness after the treatment as the fat cells are unloading their contents. Mesotherapy is also very good with the appearance of cellulite unlike liposuction which cannot be used in locations where there is cellulite. There is no downtime with Mesotherapy unlike the 2+ weeks of downtime required after liposuction. There are no restrictive garments necessary after mesotherapy treatment and no abnormal weight gain in other non-treated locations. There is minimal bruising and pain and you can maintain your normal daily activities after treatment.
Admittedly, Mesotherapy can take more than one treatment but given that there is zero downtime afterwards, it's easy to schedule into a busy life. A study of topical fat reduction by UCLA researchers in 1994-1995, it was concluded that women who had Mesotherapy injections lost weight even without diet or exercise. Mesotherapy is an excellent body sculpting and cellulite treatment for most healthy people of any age. Most people can discern improvements in 1-3 treatments and fat pads under the eyes will show visible improvement after the first or second treatment. The results are long lasting but once you have gotten to your optimal look, it is useful to have a touch-up done every few months.
The technique for mesotherapy is unique. A vitamin/phosphatidylcholine solution is injected into numbed skin using a very short and thin needle. The solution is placed into the mesoderm layer of your skin where blood vessels slowly distribute the solution to the targeted area. There may be minimal bruising and swelling in the hours and days post treatment but this is minor and part of the action of fat dissolution. You should see noticeable results in 10-14 days after most of the swelling disappears. Mesotherapy treatments can be repeated in 2-4 weeks if required.
